Coyotes in Sarasota Florida
This coyote was in Gulf Gate East 12/12/2009 at 4 PM. Coyotes have been in Florida for a shorter time than in many other states so their habits are not as well-known. They are elusive and more active at dawn and dusk but you may see them anytime. Their home range is approximately 3,000 acres. They may travel individually or in groups of two or three. Coyotes are members of the dog family and are one of eight species in the U.S.. Coyotes, red wolves and dogs are capable of interbreeding and producing fertile offspring. They feed on rodents, rabbits, lizards, snakes, fish, insects, grass, fruit (watermelon, wild berries and persimmons) and carrion. Their numbers are increasing in Florida. Ranchers in other parts of the country have found their livestock, especially sheep, killed by coyotes. Small pets could be in danger if a hungry coyote is around. Coyotes bark, yap and howl. One blogger wrote about the coyotes passing through her property and playing with her dog's toys. Several times they left with them and returned them a few days later. The coyote in the photo above was the size of a small German Shepherd. It did not seem threatening or shy, As with any wild animal, it is not advised to approach or annoy them.
